Clogging around

5 June 2008

Day 9 of my 10 day working stretch. So far I have yet to start a 4,500 word essay that’s due on Tuesday. I realised this as I was going to bed last night, and there was much brow furrowing and playing-with-my-shirt-hem (a habit I do when I am worried/stressed/uncomfortable/bored) aaaackkkkkk

It’s great to be back at my normal job, hurrraaahhh. The commercial gallery was an.. interesting experience. It’s just such a different atmosphere to what I’m used to and what I was expecting. I was mostly in the asian art gallery showing prospective bidders the objects d’art that were part of the auction. Great stuff, there were lots of old pots and daggers and snuff bottles, but really I knew zero about any of the art there which was disheartening as I couldn’t answer any questions. Sample conversation:

Fatcat: HRrrmmmMM how OLD is this pot, do you know?

Me: Er, really old?

Fatcat: ….

The only thing I knew abit about was the set of 6 Japanese paintings depicting the Tale of Ise, but unfortunately no one asked me to show it to them. The other casuals I worked with were all either Masters of Art Curatorship students, and about half of them had something to do with Craft Vic. Small world! Anyway, it was quite an uncomfortable experience as there was lots of standing around and small talk being made, sigh. I’ve also learnt to never work on Sundays, it just feels so wrong to be spending the whole day cooped up in a musty showroom showing fat rich people $10,000 corroded pots and gilt-bronzed statuettes of Buddhist deities and not getting paid a penalty rate.

Anyhow, the next project I am embarking on is re-vamping Clog! It’s the blog extension of CV and right now it’s looking a little dull, just ok but could be a better read. So I put together some ideas, pitched it, and now I get to zhng it (hah!). It’ll be alot of work, but I think it’s going to be fun. Much better than compiling a list of 2009 Funding Opportunties. BORING. I’ve linked it on my blogroll, so do check it from time to time to see it metamorphose. The first step will be updating the links section to include lots of other blogs and makers. The next step is a surprise, but if all goes well, this could be so exciting! Its funny that I’ve volunteered to take this project on when I am a lousy blogger what with my irregular image-heavy posts that I backdate to make it seem like I am a consistent blogger… teehee!

I just realised I’ve let that horrendous misspelling of ‘hirsute’ slip by for several days now. Curses! There is nothing I dislike more than bad spelling (except for breaking in uncomfortable shoes), in particular people who spell ‘definitely’ as ‘definately’. You know who you are. Anyway I’m sure no one noticed, save for the five people who looked at my blog yesterday, a tasty bit of info I have blog stats to thank.

On a side note, a crisis of more epic proportions occurred today, specifically proportions amounting to $27.50. The heels of my killer ostrich booties (I keep hyping them up in my mind for fear that one day I will realise that they are actually fug) totally crumbled under my mighty step a mere 50 metres upon leaving my house. The horror! I had to run home, swap shoes for a crappy pair of canvas flats and run back to work. But it’s ok, they’re at the cobbler’s now and on Friday they will be back in my paws. Yes!

In addition to being payday, today also marks another momentous occasion – the 10 day working week (including this weekend). In the course of the next week and a half I will spread myself extreeeeemely thin across my two jobs while finishing a 3,000 and 4,500 thousand word research essay due on the 6th and 10th of June respectively. Oh boy. I guess after that I will have some serious ching in the bank and a whole winter of nothing to look forward to. Except plotting what I will purchase next. Hah!

Also of interest, check this out – it’s pretty rad. I heard that person on the left column, third from the bottom is awesome. So far it’s been 3 (maybe 4?) weeks, it could be over in 2 months’ time, it could not. I’m hoping the latter, it’s a great job! I start my second job this Saturday, I am quite anxious about what it will entail seeing as the brief calls for ‘tailored suits, trousers, skirts or dresses’ for work during auctions. Egads!
